She has studied with both Asian and Western meditation masters, most notably Venerables Chanmyay Myaing Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Vivekananda, and practiced for a time as a nun in Burma. She has also trained to offer spiritual care, as a Buddhist chaplain, for those facing difficulty or loss. Kate is involved in teaching metta and vipassana retreats primarily in the Northwest U.S. and British Columbia, where she resides. She emphasizes practicing right where we are as a doorway to the natural unfolding of wisdom and love.
COMMITTED PRACTICE GROUPS BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER
NEW GROUP MEMBERS WELCOME
Held in a climate of loving-kindness and safety, Committed Practice groups
are designed to help us deepen our practice of meditation and learn to take the
benefits of the practice off the cushion into every part of our human lives.
Monday Morning Group held 8:00 am-9:30 am begins September 15.
Led by Beth Shoyer and Joe McCormack.
We will continue our exploration of the book Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach, exploring the process of opening to all of our experience, the joyful, the sorrowful, and everything in between. As we open to an ever expanding range of our humanity, we create greater inner harmony, even with those experiences that are painful.
Thursday Evening Group held 7:00 pm-8:30 pm begins September 18.
Led by Terry Furstenau and Tonda March.
We will be using Pema Chodron’s book, “Taking the Leap” to encourage ourselves to break free of destructive patterns in our lives. We will use our natural intelligence, warmth and openness to make peace with ourselves and our circumstances.
Cost: Committed Practice Groups are offered on a dana (voluntary donation) basis.
Requirements: Registration is required. Also, we ask that new participants have three months of regular, preferably daily, meditation practice, familiarity with basic Buddhist concepts, and a brief conference with one of the teachers.
SHOW ME DHARMA BOARD MEETING
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 4:00-6:00 PM
Show Me Dharma’s Board of Trustees will meet on Sunday September 13 from 4:00-6:00 pm at Show Me Dharma Center. SIX-WEEK INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION CLASS
BEGINNING WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1
Led by Terry Furstenau, Show Me Dharma Teachers Council
Dates and Time: Wednesday Evenings 6:30 pm-8:00 pm, October 1 to November 5, 2014 Location: Show Me Dharma Center, 1600 Broadway Cost: Offered on a dana (donation) basis
SMD will be offering an Introduction to Meditation class on Wednesday nights beginning
October 1. The class meets from 6:30 to 8 pm for 6 weeks. Whether you are beginning meditation practice, wanting to increase your commitment to your meditation practice, find a community of support, or clarify your understanding, this 6-week series may be for you.
We will be exploring meditation on the cushion as well as in daily life. We will work to strengthen our ability to notice and short circuit painful habitual patterns, even as we develop acceptance for the difficult aspects of our personality. Our focus will continue to remain on how we experience this mystery we call ‘life’ and we’ll include plenty of time for questions and sharing. Each class will consist of a talk, meditation practice, and group discussion. This class is appropriate for new sitters as well as those that would like to re-establish their practice. Bring friends or relatives that have an interest. The class is offered on a dana basis. Registration is required. Contact Terry at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 660-248-1770 to register or get more information.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONS FROM 3:30-5:00 PM

Show Me Dharma’s Board and Teachers Collective have agreed to begin offering an open sitting time from 3:30 pm-5:00 pm. This is a time for SMD members to come and do silent meditation practice. There will be no instructions or dharma talk, just an open period to sit in meditation. Come for as long or as little of the time as fits your schedule. The library will also be open for members to browse, and to visit and have conversation. Please contact Valerie Bader to volunteer to open the sangha for sitting on Saturdays at email@example.com
